Tuesday, February 12, Fort Smith, AR – 64.6 Downtown and Bastion Gallery are pleased to announce artist in residence Kevin Arnold has set up studio at Bastion Gallery. He will open his first solo exhibition in Fort Smith at Bastion on Friday, March 1 entitled Image Surface.
This exhibition explores humanities curiosity with the surfaces on which paintings are made. More than a window or another electronic screen, the viewer encounters the painting as a visceral thing, an image to be deciphered as physical evidence of its creator.
Moving forwards and back, rising and sinking, Arnold’s work emphasizes the tensions created when the illusion of the tangible pushes up against the pictorial plane just slight of breaking through. At times, he exploits the artifice by painting the subject to a level of realism that disrupts the viewers habits of looking.
In addition to working out of the Gallery and exhibiting artwork, Arnold has created Faction Studio Series, a new breed of art classes that fosters partnerships with regional university art faculty to propose and offer their own 6-week art course. The first series begins with Figurative Space: An accelerated approach to learning to draw the human form. Classes begin March 7th from 6-9pm every Thursday, taught by Arnold. All skill levels are welcome.
Faction Studios is a place where any person regardless of their age, gender, socio-economic background and skill level can find access to University level instruction at a fraction of the cost. Faction Studios location will change throughout the year based on class size and needs. For more information about Faction Studios and classes email email@example.com.
